Seven women members were sworn in as ministers in the new Prime Minister Narendra Modi Cabinet at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday, June 9. Among these distinguished women leaders are notable figures such as Nirmala Sitharaman, Annapurna Devi, Anupriya Singh Patel, Shobha Karandlaje, Raksha Khadse, Savitri Thakur, and Nimuben Bambhaniya.

The swearing-in ceremony, held in the grand forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, was attended by a diverse array of dignitaries, including heads of state, political veterans, debutants, business magnates, and even a few film stars, adding a touch of glamour to the proceedings. Prime Minister Modi’s inclusion of seven women ministers underscores his commitment to fostering gender equality and empowerment in Indian governance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s re-election victory, securing a second consecutive term in office, further solidified his status as a formidable political leader. With this accomplishment, PM Modi joins the ranks of the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who achieved electoral success in the 1952, 1957, and 1962 general elections.

In the Modi 3.0 Cabinet, the women ministers have been allocated key portfolios reflecting their diverse expertise and leadership capabilities. Notable among them are:

1.     Nirmala Sitharaman (BJP): Assumes the crucial role of Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs, bringing her extensive experience in economics and governance to the forefront.

2.     Annapurna Devi (BJP): Takes charge as the Minister of Women and Child Development, tasked with addressing vital issues concerning maternal and child welfare across the nation.

In addition to Sitharaman and Devi, other women ministers have been sworn in as Ministers of State, each entrusted with specific portfolios:

  • Anupriya Patel (Apna Dal): Assumes the dual responsibilities of Minister of State of Health and Family Welfare, and Minister of State of Chemicals and Fertilizers, reflecting her commitment to public health and pharmaceuticals.
  • Shobha Karandlaje (BJP): Takes on the role of Minister of State of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Minister of State of Labour and Employment, focusing on empowering small businesses and ensuring labor welfare.
  • Raksha Nikhil Khadse (BJP): Assumes the responsibilities of Minister of State of Youth Affairs and Sports, aimed at promoting sports and youth development initiatives nationwide.
  • Savitri Thakur (BJP): Undertakes the role of Minister of State of Women and Child Development, contributing to efforts aimed at advancing gender equality and ensuring the welfare of women and children.
  • Nimuben Bambhaniya (BJP): Takes on the responsibilities of Minister of State of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, working towards ensuring food security and consumer protection.

The inclusion of these women ministers in the Modi Cabinet not only reflects the government’s commitment to gender diversity but also acknowledges their significant contributions to various fields, ranging from finance and healthcare to sports and social welfare. As they assume their roles, these women leaders are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s developmental agenda and advancing the nation towards greater prosperity and inclusivity.
