The Southern Railway is expediting efforts to restore rail connectivity to Rameswaram, an island drawing thousands of devotees daily from across India. This initiative comes as a beacon of hope, with the iconic 110-year-old Cantilever bridge soon to be replaced by a cutting-edge structure.

Innovative Infrastructure

The forthcoming bridge, poised to become India’s inaugural vertical lift sea bridge, spans 2.07 kilometres. Featuring 100 spans, including a navigational span of 72.5 metres, it’s designed to accommodate potential future track doubling needs.

Challenges and Progress

Delays, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and unique construction hurdles, beset the project initiated in 2020. Nevertheless, recent progress includes the launch of the vertical lift span, a monumental feat facilitated by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).

Anticipated Completion

With an estimated cost of Rs 280 crore, the bridge is slated for completion by June, followed by rigorous testing before its operational debut. Though deadlines have been adjusted due to the project’s complexity, officials remain optimistic about resuming commercial train operations by late 2024.

Technical Triumphs

Navigating curved alignments and precise sea-based construction present formidable challenges. Despite these obstacles, RVNL is deploying meticulous strategies to ensure the bridge’s safe and efficient completion.

Historical Significance

The Cantilever bridge, a relic of colonial-era engineering, endured a tumultuous past, including severe damage during the 1964 cyclone. Yet, it remains a revered landmark, symbolizing resilience and the enduring spirit of Rameswaram.

A Testament to Innovation

As the new bridge nears completion, it symbolises not just enhanced connectivity but also India’s capacity for innovation and infrastructure development. Like its predecessor, it’s poised to leave an indelible mark on the landscape, embodying progress and resilience.
