Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), the operator of Kerala’s largest airport near Kochi, has announced a significant advancement in its parking facilities with the introduction of FASTag and Smart Parking System. The initiative aims to enhance the overall parking experience for travellers and reduce waiting times at entry-exit points.

Trial Phase Success and Operational Date

After successfully completing a trial phase, CIAL is set to make the FASTag and Smart Parking System operational from December 1. The system’s efficiency was demonstrated during the trial, showcasing a remarkable reduction in waiting time at the entry-exit points from approximately 2 minutes to an impressive 8 seconds.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Parking Efficiency

CIAL’s press release on Wednesday highlighted the incorporation of cutting-edge technology to streamline parking operations. The airport boasts a parking capacity for 2,800 vehicles at both its domestic and international terminals.

Integration of FASTag for Seamless Entry

The FASTag system, commonly known as an electronic toll collection system operated by the National Highways Authority of India, will be utilised for both parking and entry to the airport. While a dedicated lane for vehicles without FASTag will be temporarily available, CIAL emphasises the swift transition to a fully FASTag-enabled system.

Addressing Taxi Parking Demand

Responding to longstanding demands from local authorities and the police, CIAL has expanded its parking facilities to accommodate commercial taxi services that traditionally park on the roadside leading to the airport. The decision has been made to collect entry fees from all taxis accessing the airport premises. For taxis, the entry fee is set at Rs 60, with an additional parking charge of Rs 80 per hour, inclusive of the entry fee.

Key Features of FASTag and Smart Parking System

CIAL outlines key features of its innovative system, including a Parking Management System (PMS) designed to optimise parking operations for maximum efficiency. The Parking Guidance System (PGS) ensures smooth navigation during entry, exit, and within the parking facility.

Real-Time Parking Updates

The Parking Slot Counting System provides real-time updates on available parking spaces, assisting travellers in making informed decisions. Additionally, the Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) integrated with the ticketing system offers precise counting of vehicle entry times.

Passenger-Friendly Pay-on-Foot Stations

CIAL introduces pay-on-foot stations, an automatic mechanism for parking payment that allows passengers to independently operate the system. This user-friendly feature is accessible through a custom mobile portal available on the CIAL mobile application.

Effortless Parking Slot Booking

Passengers can conveniently book parking slots according to their preferences through the customised mobile portal, enhancing the overall user experience at Cochin International Airport.

The implementation of the FASTag and Smart Parking System marks a significant leap in parking technology for CIAL, ensuring a smoother and more efficient parking experience for travellers at Kerala’s busiest airport.
