Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) is embarking on a significant venture, setting up a 12-megawatt (MW) on-site solar project at Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle manufacturing facility located in Maharashtra. This development marks a stride towards sustainable energy practices in the industrial sector.

Power Purchase Agreement Signed

In a recent announcement, TPREL disclosed that it has formally inked a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tata Motors, cementing their commitment to advancing renewable energy generation. Under this agreement, the installation of a 12MWp on-site solar project will take place at Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle manufacturing facility in Pune, Maharashtra.

Significant Environmental Impact Expected

The ambitious project is expected to yield approximately 17.5 million units of electricity annually. Beyond its role in bolstering the facility’s energy needs, it’s anticipated that this initiative will lead to a substantial reduction of over 12,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year. This aligns with Tata Motors’ and TPREL’s shared vision for a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Aiming for a Sustainable Future

Ashish Khanna, CEO of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd, underscored the significance of this milestone, stating, “Signing of 12MWp PPA with Tata Motors underlines our critical step forward on the shared goals for a sustainable future. We are committed to support the energy transition of our C&I consumers through a bouquet of our clean energy solutions.”

Building on a Legacy of Green Energy Initiatives

This latest project joins a series of noteworthy green energy endeavors by TPREL. The company has recently completed a 28.12 MW green energy plant for Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing India Private Limited (SSMI) and established a 6 MW captive solar plant for Chalet Hotels, both in Maharashtra. Additionally, TPREL commissioned a 26 MW captive solar plant for Neosym Industry Limited (Neosym) in the same region.

Financial Details Not Disclosed

While the financial specifics of the Tata Motors project remain undisclosed, industry estimates suggest that a capital investment of approximately Rs 5-6 crore is typically required to set up 1 MW of solar energy capacity.

Tata Power Renewable Energy’s Expanding Footprint

As of now, TPREL, a subsidiary of Tata Power, boasts a total renewables capacity of 7,821 MW, which includes projects at various stages of implementation amounting to 3,689 MW. The company’s operational capacity stands at 4,132 MW, encompassing 3,139 MW of solar capacity and 993 MW of wind energy. This robust portfolio reinforces Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd’s position as a leader in the renewable energy sector.
