India plans Tech-enabled Toll System

India intends to implement a camera-aided toll system for smooth functioning on Highways

India plans to implement a camera-aided new toll system on Highways. The new system is called the Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) camera. ANPR will scan the number plate of a vehicle. Then, the toll will be deducted from the owner’s associated bank account. The entry and exit points will have ANPR cameras. The government believes that the ANPR system will be a solution to the long queues on toll plazas. However, it is not a foolproof idea. The camera won’t detect vehicles sold before 2019. It will also be challenging to read the number plates of vehicles like trucks. Currently, India follows the FASTag system.
