The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is offering a ₹1,000 FASTag recharge to commuters who report dirty toilets at toll plazas along national highways. Under its Clean Toilet Picture Challenge, users can submit photographs of unclean facilities through the RajmargYatra mobile app and receive a reward after verification.

Launched in September 2025, the initiative aims to improve cleanliness and hygiene at highway toilet facilities by encouraging public participation. NHAI has extended the campaign until June 30, 2027, following responses from highway users. The authority said 429 commuters had received ₹1,000 FASTag recharges for reporting unclean toilets during 2026 up to the time of its July announcement.
How to Report an Unclean Toilet
Commuters must use the latest version of the RajmargYatra app to upload a clear, geo-tagged and time-stamped photograph of the unclean toilet. They must also provide details including their name, location, vehicle registration number and mobile number.
Eligible reports are assessed through AI-assisted screening and manual verification where required. Once a submission is validated, the ₹1,000 reward is credited as a FASTag recharge linked to the vehicle registration number. The reward is non-transferable and cannot be claimed in cash.
Key Rules for Claiming the Reward
The scheme applies only to toilets constructed, operated or maintained under NHAI’s jurisdiction. Toilets at petrol stations, roadside dhabas and other facilities outside NHAI’s control are excluded.
Each vehicle registration number can receive only one reward during the scheme period. Each eligible toilet facility can qualify for only one reward per day, regardless of how many complaints are submitted. If multiple reports are received for the same facility on the same day, only the first valid submission will be considered.
Photographs that are edited, duplicated or previously submitted will be rejected.
Improving Highway Travel Facilities
The campaign is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve the experience of national highway users. Other measures include pothole repairs, improved road safety signage, flyover beautification, removal of encroachments and better maintenance of toll plaza facilities.
By involving commuters in reporting problems, NHAI aims to identify hygiene issues and encourage timely action by the agencies responsible for maintaining highway amenities. The extended deadline gives travellers more time to participate and help improve facilities along national highways.
