The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has partnered with Japan’s Mie University to expand academic and research collaboration between India and Japan, focusing on semiconductors, digital technologies and talent development.

The institutions signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) at IIT Hyderabad on September 15, 2026. The agreements establish a framework for academic cooperation, student exchanges and joint research initiatives. The partnership was announced publicly on October 13.
Student and Faculty Exchanges in Focus
The agreements provide for exchanges involving students, faculty and staff, along with the sharing of academic information, joint research, lectures, symposia and other mutually agreed activities.
A separate student exchange agreement allows students from the two institutions to study at the partner university for one or two consecutive academic semesters, subject to mutually agreed conditions. The programme is expected to provide students and researchers with opportunities to gain international academic exposure and collaborate across institutions.
Semiconductor Research Takes Priority
Semiconductors and digital technologies are central to the collaboration. Mie University has a dedicated Semiconductor Division under its Centre for Semiconductor and Digital Future Creation, while Japan’s Mie Prefecture is an established semiconductor industry hub.
The partnership is expected to support research, develop skilled talent and strengthen links between universities and industry. It could also open opportunities for collaboration with semiconductor companies and organisations in Mie Prefecture, including the Mie Semiconductor Network.
Prof. Hideto Miyake, who leads Mie University’s Semiconductor Division, said the agreement could create new opportunities for students and young researchers while strengthening connections with the semiconductor industry.
Strengthening India-Japan Technology Cooperation
IIT Hyderabad Director Prof. B. S. Murty said the partnership would build on the academic and technological relationship between India and Japan. He highlighted the potential for students, faculty members and researchers from both institutions to work together through exchanges and joint academic activities.
The collaboration comes as semiconductors gain importance across electronics, artificial intelligence, telecommunications and digital infrastructure. Partnerships between universities can help develop specialised talent and connect academic research with the needs of technology companies.
For IIT Hyderabad and Mie University, the MoUs provide a foundation for long-term cooperation in education and research. The institutions aim to create opportunities for international learning, strengthen semiconductor expertise and develop talent capable of working across global technology ecosystems.
