Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is preparing a master plan to guide the development of the airport over the next 25 years, with a focus on expanding passenger, cargo and other airport facilities.
A next-generation Cargo Village and a dedicated heliport are expected to be key parts of the plan, according to CIAL officials. The plan is being prepared as the airport company marks its 25th anniversary.
The master plan will cover the airport’s airside and terminal facilities, cargo operations, landside infrastructure, connectivity, utilities, commercial development and sustainability. It will also assess the land required to support the airport’s future expansion.
CIAL has awarded the consultancy for preparing the master plan at a cost of ₹7.83 crore. The consultant has been given 10 months to complete the work.
As part of the exercise, a 25-year forecast of aviation demand will be prepared to assess the airport’s future requirements. The study will also examine the feasibility of building a second runway along with the required taxiways and apron facilities.
The plan will further include a feasibility and development strategy for a next-generation Cargo Village and a dedicated heliport. The study will cover facilities such as a heliport terminal, aircraft hangars and connectivity infrastructure.
The long-term plan is aimed at helping CIAL prepare its infrastructure and land requirements in line with the expected growth in aviation demand.
