Kerala is set to get its first dedicated Container Freight Station (CFS) to support the growing cargo operations at Vizhinjam International Seaport. The facility is being developed by Kerala State Industrial Enterprises Limited (KSIE) as part of the state government’s 100-day action plan.
The CFS will be established on nearly five acres of land at the Travancore Spinning Mills compound in Balaramapuram. An existing built-up area of around 40,000 sq ft at the site is expected to be adapted for container handling, cargo examination, storage and related operations.
The facility is aimed at creating a dedicated inland logistics point closer to Vizhinjam, reducing the distance containers need to travel for port-related processing. It is expected to support exporters, importers and logistics operators as direct export-import activity at Vizhinjam expands.
The government is targeting January 2027 for the facility to become operational, subject to preparatory work and necessary Customs approvals. A second facility is also planned at Kerala Automobiles Limited, with around five acres earmarked primarily for an empty-container yard.
The development comes as Vizhinjam expands beyond transshipment operations and strengthens its role in Kerala’s direct export-import trade. The state is also exploring additional logistics infrastructure around the port to support the growth of cargo movement and build a stronger port-linked logistics network.
