Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom has offered India access to technologies and cooperation in nuclear energy and critical minerals, adding a new dimension to the India-Russia partnership during the BRICS Summit.
The discussions come as both countries look to expand cooperation beyond traditional areas such as defence and energy. Critical minerals have emerged as a strategic priority for India as it seeks to secure supplies of resources essential for electronics, electric vehicles, renewable energy and advanced technologies.
Rosatom has proposed cooperation in technologies linked to the extraction and processing of critical minerals, alongside its expertise in nuclear energy. The offer comes as India pushes to strengthen domestic capabilities and diversify supply chains for strategically important resources.
Nuclear energy is another key area of cooperation. India and Russia are already partners in the Kudankulam nuclear power project, while the two sides are exploring further expansion of Russia-designed nuclear power capacity in India. Recent Modi-Putin talks also identified nuclear energy and critical minerals as important areas for deeper bilateral cooperation.
The latest proposals could strengthen India-Russia cooperation in strategic technologies while supporting India’s efforts to expand clean energy capacity and secure critical mineral supply chains.
The development comes amid a broader push by BRICS countries to strengthen cooperation in energy, technology, manufacturing and critical minerals as global supply chains undergo major shifts.
