India and Bangladesh are set to discuss the possible restart of key cross-border passenger train services at a meeting of railway authorities from both countries.
The Maitree Express, Mitali Express and Bandhan Express are on the agenda at the annual Inter-Governmental Railway Meeting. This is the first time since 2024 that the resumption of these passenger services will be formally discussed.
The three services have been important links between the two neighbouring countries, connecting major cities and supporting people-to-people travel, tourism and regional connectivity.
The Maitree Express connects Dhaka and Kolkata, while the Bandhan Express links Khulna and Kolkata. The Mitali Express connects Dhaka with New Jalpaiguri, providing another important rail link between the two countries.
The services were suspended amid political unrest and disruptions in Bangladesh. While freight railway operations have resumed on some routes, passenger connectivity has remained largely stalled.
The latest talks signal a possible effort to restore normal cross-border passenger movement and strengthen transport connectivity between India and Bangladesh.
Reports indicate that the services could potentially resume as early as October 2026, subject to approvals and coordination between the two governments.
A revival of the services could provide passengers with a convenient alternative to air and road travel while also supporting tourism, trade and stronger regional links.
The discussions therefore carry significance beyond railways, as both countries look to rebuild practical connectivity amid broader bilateral challenges.
