India and Sri Lanka are moving closer to finalising a $61.5 million redevelopment project for Kankesanthurai Port in Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna peninsula. The project will be funded through an Indian government grant.

Officials from both countries recently held discussions in Colombo and resolved several outstanding issues related to the proposed agreements. However, the MoUs have not yet been signed, with India’s delegation expected to report the outcome to New Delhi for a final decision.
The redevelopment plan includes repairing existing breakwaters, piers and roads, further dredging and wreck removal, and constructing a new pier and warehouse. Dredging of the turning basin to eight metres has already been completed.
The two countries have also proposed joint steering and technical committees to oversee the project.
Kankesanthurai Port is being developed for passenger and cargo connectivity with southern India, strengthening maritime links between the two countries and supporting economic activity in northern Sri Lanka.
