Ford is planning a major electric vehicle manufacturing facility at its Maraimalai Nagar plant near Chennai, as the automaker looks to strengthen its India operations and build an export base for affordable EVs.
The proposed brownfield project could include EV assembly as well as batteries, cells, motors and other critical components, potentially turning the Chennai facility into an integrated electric-vehicle manufacturing hub.
The facility is also being positioned as an Asia-Pacific hub for affordable electric vehicles, with production expected to cater primarily to export markets. This could allow Ford to use its existing manufacturing infrastructure in Tamil Nadu to develop and produce lower-cost EVs for regional markets.
The move marks a significant shift in Ford’s India strategy, with the company looking to leverage Chennai as a manufacturing and export base while expanding its focus on electric mobility.
