A major maritime accident was narrowly avoided off Kochi after a Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC)-operated Ro-Ro ferry developed an engine failure during its routine service between Fort Kochi and Vypeen. The vessel lost propulsion and drifted into the busy shipping channel towards the open sea.
The ferry was carrying around 50 passengers, including children, along with several cars, motorcycles and a minibus. The Fisheries Marine Enforcement wing launched an emergency rescue operation, securing the drifting vessel and towing it to safety before any collision or further danger occurred. All passengers were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the engine failure, while the incident has renewed attention on maritime safety and vessel maintenance for passenger ferry services operating in Kerala’s coastal waters.
