The Indian Navy launched Machilipatnam (BY 529), the seventh of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) being built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), on July 29, 2026. The vessel is a key addition to India’s growing indigenous naval fleet and reflects the country’s continued focus on strengthening maritime security.
Named after the historic port city of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, the ship honours India’s rich maritime legacy while enhancing the Navy’s capability to safeguard the nation’s vast coastline and strategic interests.
Built with more than 80% indigenous content, the warship is equipped for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare. These capabilities will significantly improve coastal defence, maritime domain awareness and operational readiness.
The launch marks another major milestone under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, showcasing the growing strength of India’s domestic shipbuilding industry. Once commissioned, Machilipatnam will play a crucial role in enhancing the Indian Navy’s capabilities across the Indian Ocean Region.
