Indian Railways provides two bedsheets to passengers travelling in AC coaches as part of its standard bedroll kit to ensure better hygiene, comfort and convenience during overnight journeys.
The bedroll facility is available for passengers travelling in First AC, Second AC, Third AC and AC Economy classes, with the cost included in the ticket fare. Each kit contains two bedsheets, one pillow cover and a hand towel.
Explaining the reason behind providing two bedsheets, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said one bedsheet is meant to be used on the sleeping berth, while the second acts as a protective layer between passengers and the blanket. This helps prevent direct contact with the blanket, improving cleanliness and hygiene.
The Minister said the additional bedsheet used as a blanket cover is washed after every single use. The clarification was given in response to questions regarding railway linen cleaning practices and passenger hygiene measures.
To further improve cleanliness standards, Indian Railways has introduced technologies such as AI-based stain detection cameras and Whito-Meters at mechanised laundries. These systems help monitor the quality and cleanliness of washed linen across the railway network.
Indian Railways has also started pilot initiatives to provide blanket covers for AC passengers on trains operated by North Western Railway and on the newly launched Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Kamakhya and Howrah.
The Railway Ministry said linen items such as bedsheets, blankets and towels are replaced according to their condition and service life under existing guidelines. Items found unsuitable for use are removed and replaced as required.
These measures are part of Indian Railways’ efforts to improve passenger comfort, maintain hygiene standards and provide a better travel experience for AC coach passengers.
