India’s job market is increasingly expanding beyond traditional metropolitan centres, with smaller cities emerging as new hubs for employment and talent.
LinkedIn’s 2026 “Cities on the Rise” list identifies 10 non-metro Indian cities witnessing the strongest momentum in hiring, job postings and professional migration. Visakhapatnam topped the list, followed by Ludhiana, Surat, Vadodara and Prayagraj.
The ranking highlights the growing importance of Tier-2 cities in India’s employment landscape. These cities are attracting new investments, expanding their technology and industrial ecosystems and creating opportunities across sectors including IT, manufacturing, banking, infrastructure and digital services.
LinkedIn’s research also points to rising competition in the job market, with the number of applicants per open role more than doubling since early 2022.
The trend suggests that professionals may increasingly be able to build careers without relocating to India’s biggest metros. As businesses expand into emerging cities, the geography of jobs and talent in India is undergoing a major shift.
