NASA astronaut Dr. Anil Menon has embarked on his first mission to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft. The mission marks a major milestone in his career as he joins Expedition 74/75 for an approximately eight-month stay in orbit, where he will conduct scientific research, technology demonstrations, and studies on human health in space.

Although born and raised in the United States, Anil Menon’s family traces its roots to Palakkad, Kerala, giving the district a special place in India’s growing space story. A former emergency medicine physician, U.S. Air Force colonel, NASA flight surgeon, and SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, Menon was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2021 before being assigned to his maiden space mission.
Palakkad’s connection to global space exploration extends beyond Anil Menon. The district is also linked to Anna Menon, the former SpaceX engineer and commercial astronaut who flew on the Polaris Dawn mission, and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, one of ISRO’s Gaganyaan astronauts. This unique association has made Palakkad one of the few places in India connected to astronauts representing NASA, SpaceX, and ISRO.
During his stay aboard the ISS, Anil Menon will participate in research aimed at improving human health in space, advancing medical knowledge, and testing technologies that could support future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars. His expertise in aerospace medicine is expected to play a key role in several scientific experiments conducted during the expedition.
For Kerala, and particularly Palakkad, Menon’s mission is more than a personal achievement. It underscores the district’s growing association with human spaceflight and serves as an inspiration for aspiring scientists, engineers, and astronauts across India.
