The Tamil Nadu government will launch the ‘Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ on September 15, the birth anniversary of Dravidian leader C.N. Annadurai, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on Friday.

Under the scheme, every eligible newborn delivered in a government hospital will receive a one-gram gold ring valued at around ₹13,600. The initiative is inspired by the traditional Thaimaaman Seer, in which a maternal uncle presents gifts to welcome a newborn into the family.
To oversee the programme, the government will establish a dedicated state project and programme management unit responsible for implementing, monitoring and managing the scheme.
The initiative fulfills an election promise made by Chief Minister Vijay ahead of the Assembly elections, when he pledged to gift a gold ring to every eligible child born in the state as a symbolic maternal uncle.
The government has allocated ₹755.83 crore annually for the scheme.
According to official data, Tamil Nadu records around 7.8 lakh births every year, with institutional deliveries accounting for 99.9% of all births. Government hospitals handle nearly 4.2 lakh deliveries, representing about 53% of total births in the state.
Who Is Eligible?
The scheme is open to Tamil Nadu residents whose babies are born in government healthcare institutions. Eligible mothers must provide proof of residence using documents such as:
- Aadhaar Card
- Ration Card
- Voter ID
- Labour Welfare Board ID Card
- Department of Posts Address Proof Card
- Nativity Certificate
The government expects the initiative to benefit lakhs of families each year while encouraging institutional deliveries and celebrating the birth of every child through a culturally significant gesture.
