Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Australia is set to mark a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties, with discussions expected to centre on a long-term uranium supply agreement, enhanced defence cooperation and greater economic collaboration. The visit comes as India and Australia seek to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership amid evolving geopolitical and energy security challenges.

A key priority for India is securing reliable uranium supplies to support its expanding civilian nuclear energy programme. Officials are expected to discuss ways to ensure a stable and long-term supply of Australian uranium while also exploring cooperation in critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt and rare earth elements, which are essential for clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing.

Defence cooperation is also expected to feature prominently during the visit. Both countries are likely to discuss expanding joint military exercises, strengthening maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, enhancing defence technology collaboration and improving interoperability between their armed forces. The talks are expected to build on existing frameworks under the Quad and other regional security initiatives.

Beyond strategic cooperation, the two nations are expected to focus on boosting bilateral trade, investment and collaboration in sectors including education, renewable energy, technology, agriculture and infrastructure. The visit is anticipated to reinforce India’s growing partnership with Australia and open new avenues for cooperation across energy, security and economic development.
