The FIFA World Cup 2026 began in spectacular fashion at Mexico City’s iconic Estadio Azteca, where global superstar Shakira headlined the opening ceremony before more than 80,000 fans. The tournament marks the first-ever 48-team World Cup and is being co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
The biggest attraction of the evening was Shakira, who performed “Dai Dai,” the tournament’s official anthem, alongside Nigerian artist Burna Boy. The performance featured elaborate stage visuals, dancers and a giant World Cup trophy display.

The opening match saw co-hosts Mexico defeat South Africa 2-0 in Group A. Julián Quiñones scored the tournament’s first goal in the 9th minute after capitalizing on a defensive error, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Mexico dominated much of the contest, creating several chances before veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead with a header in the 67th minute. The goal was particularly significant as it marked Jiménez’s first-ever World Cup goal.
The match turned increasingly physical in the second half. South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole was sent off shortly after halftime, while Themba Zwane received another red card late in the game, reducing South Africa to nine men. Mexico’s César Montes was also dismissed in stoppage time.
The fixture carried historical significance as it was a repeat of the 2010 World Cup opener between the same two nations, which ended in a 1-1 draw. This time, Mexico secured all three points and moved to the top of Group A.
With the win, Mexico made a strong start to its home World Cup campaign and now turns its attention to upcoming group-stage matches against South Korea and Czechia.
