India’s first domestically manufactured C-295 military transport aircraft has completed its maiden test flight, marking a historic moment for the country’s aerospace and defence sector.

The aircraft is being produced under a partnership between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems, making it the first military aircraft of its kind to be manufactured in India. The programme represents a major push toward self-reliance in defence production and advanced aerospace engineering.

The C-295 transport aircraft is designed for tactical airlift operations and will eventually replace the Indian Air Force’s ageing Avro fleet. It can transport troops, equipment, cargo and support a variety of military and humanitarian missions.

Under the agreement signed with the Indian government, 56 C-295 aircraft will be supplied to the Indian Air Force. While the initial aircraft are being delivered from Spain, the remaining 40 are being manufactured in India at the Tata-Airbus facility in Gujarat.

The successful maiden flight validates India’s growing capabilities in aircraft manufacturing and highlights the country’s ambition to emerge as a global aerospace production hub. Industry experts view the achievement as a significant boost for the Make in India initiative and the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
