Veteran engineer and “Metroman” E. Sreedharan has submitted a revised proposal for Kerala’s SilverLine semi high-speed rail project to Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, bringing the ambitious transport project back into public discussion.
According to reports, the revised project report proposes a high-speed rail corridor aimed at significantly reducing travel time across Kerala while improving connectivity between major cities. The plan is expected to focus on modern rail infrastructure, faster intercity transport, and long-term economic benefits for the state.
The original SilverLine project, proposed by K-Rail, had earlier triggered major political and environmental debates over land acquisition, rehabilitation concerns, environmental impact, and project costs. However, supporters argued that Kerala urgently requires faster mass transit infrastructure to manage rising traffic congestion and growing travel demand.
Reports suggest the updated proposal submitted by E Sreedharan includes modifications aimed at addressing earlier concerns while making the project more financially and technically viable. The revised concept reportedly explores advanced rail technologies and alternative implementation approaches to reduce disruption and improve public acceptance.
SilverLine was originally envisioned as a semi high-speed rail corridor connecting the northern and southern parts of Kerala, drastically cutting travel time between Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram. Infrastructure experts have long described the project as potentially transformative for Kerala’s transportation and economic ecosystem if implemented successfully.
