During Narendra Modi’s visit to Oslo, a question raised by a Norwegian journalist regarding press freedom in India prompted a strong response from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
According to reports, the journalist referred to international rankings and concerns related to media freedom in India during an official interaction linked to the Prime Minister’s visit. The remarks drew an immediate rebuttal from Indian officials, who rejected the criticism and defended India’s democratic institutions and media environment.
The MEA reportedly stated that India has a vibrant and diverse media landscape with thousands of publications, digital platforms, television channels, and independent voices operating across the country. Officials also criticised what they described as selective or biased global narratives surrounding India’s democratic functioning.
The exchange has sparked debate online and across political circles, with supporters calling the response a firm defence of India’s sovereignty and critics arguing that questions on media freedom remain part of broader global democratic discussions.
