The United Arab Emirates plans to develop a defence industrial free zone in Al Selmiyyah, Abu Dhabi, as part of efforts to strengthen its domestic defence manufacturing base and improve long-term military readiness.

The initiative was announced by the Tawazun Council for Defence Enablement in partnership with AD Ports Group, according to the UAE state news agency.
Focus on defence manufacturing hub
The proposed free zone aims to attract leading global defence equipment manufacturers and encourage localisation of defence production within the UAE. The broader goal is to reduce reliance on imports and build a more self-sufficient defence industrial ecosystem.
Tawazun Council, which serves as the UAE’s procurement authority for defence and security for the armed forces and Abu Dhabi police, will be responsible for regulatory oversight. This includes issuing licences, setting compliance standards, and establishing governance frameworks for the project.
AD Ports Group will handle master planning, infrastructure development, and land-use design. The Abu Dhabi-backed logistics company operates across ports, maritime services, and industrial zones, and will act as the strategic infrastructure partner for the project.
Strategic defence push in the Gulf
The development comes as the UAE and other Gulf countries continue expanding defence capabilities amid heightened regional security concerns and shifting geopolitical dynamics in West Asia.
The new zone is expected to become a long-term industrial base supporting defence innovation, manufacturing, and supply chain development within the region.
