In a stunning debut, actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have shaken the long-standing dominance of Dravidian politics in Tamil Nadu. Early Election Commission trends suggest that TVK could emerge as the single largest force in the state, marking a possible end to the DMK–AIADMK duopoly.

TVK Emerges as Front-Runner
As per trends around 1:30 PM, TVK was leading in about 110 seats out of 234, putting it ahead of both major established parties. The ruling DMK was trailing with leads in 49 seats, while the AIADMK was ahead in 56 constituencies. A party needs 118 seats for a majority, placing TVK within striking distance of power in its first election.
A First Election with Historic Impact
TVK leaders called the performance a historic shift in Tamil Nadu politics, pointing to the scale of support for a new party breaking into a highly structured political landscape. The result is being viewed as one of the most significant disruptions in recent state election history.
Party leaders also expressed confidence that Vijay would take charge as Chief Minister if the trend holds, projecting a strong mandate in the 2026 election cycle.
Rise of a New Political Force
Supporters have drawn comparisons between Vijay and former leader M. G. Ramachandran, who also transitioned from cinema to politics and reshaped the state’s political identity.
The comparison highlights a broader narrative within TVK of a mass movement driven by popularity, youth appeal, and anti-incumbency sentiment against established Dravidian parties.
Breaking the Dravidian Duopoly
For decades, Tamil Nadu politics has been dominated by DMK and AIADMK. TVK’s rise signals a potential restructuring of that political order, driven by voter fatigue and demand for a new alternative.
A Turning Point for Tamil Nadu Politics
While final results are still awaited, the early trends already point to a major political realignment. Whether TVK converts this momentum into a majority will decide if Tamil Nadu is witnessing a temporary surge or a long-term shift in its political landscape.
