Chennai is working on plans for a 53-km water metro along the Buckingham Canal, connecting Kovalam to Napier Bridge. Inspired by Kochi’s successful model, the project aims to cut road congestion, lower emissions, boost tourism, and improve flood management.

The Water Resources Department, Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), and Tamil Nadu Maritime Board are preparing a Detailed Project Report to assess feasibility, environmental impact, and costs, expected between ₹3,000 and ₹5,000 crore.

Chennai Water Metro Buckingham Canal

Initial work will focus on restoring and desilting the Buckingham Canal between Cooum and Kovalam, setting up sewage treatment plants, and improving water flow. The service will use electric and hybrid ferries, making it a key step in modernising Chennai’s transport network while reviving its waterways.
