A new sleeping pod facility has been introduced at Visakhapatnam railway station, marking the first such capsule hotel in the East Coast Railway (ECoR) Zone. The facility aims to support transit passengers, solo women travellers, and tourists with short-stay accommodation options.
Responding to Passenger Demand
Waltair Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra stated that the initiative was taken in response to continuous requests from passengers who travel to Visakhapatnam for medical care, tourism, education, or work. The facility is meant to provide a convenient and secure rest option within the station.

Pilot Project Based on Metro City Models
This pilot project has been inspired by similar capsule hotel models functioning successfully in metropolitan cities. The facility has been set up near gate number 3 on platform 1, close to the station’s main entry. Sri Mahalakshmi Agency won the contract through an e-auction and will operate the facility for five years.
Sleeping Pod Features and Amenities
The sleeping pod facility includes 73 single beds, 15 double beds, and 18 beds specifically for women, located in a separate hall with dedicated washrooms and a dressing room. Passengers also have access to free Wi-Fi, round-the-clock hot water, an in-house snack bar, and a travel desk for assistance.
Affordable Tariff Plans
The cost for using a single bed is ₹200 for up to three hours, and ₹400 for a stay extending to 24 hours. A double bed is available for ₹300 for three hours and ₹600 for 24 hours. The facility is open not only to confirmed train passengers but also to other visitors, depending on bed availability.
Station Redevelopment in Progress
In addition to the sleeping pods, Visakhapatnam railway station is undergoing a major redevelopment. According to the DRM, a Letter of Intent has been issued and work has already started. A 72-metre-long air concourse with shops is part of the plan. Talks are underway with Metro Rail authorities to link the metro station directly with the railway station.
Metro-Railway Link for Seamless Travel
The proposed air concourse will connect the railway and metro stations, allowing passengers to move between the two without exiting the station premises. This integration is expected to improve the convenience and efficiency of urban travel for rail users in Visakhapatnam.
