India will export 150 indigenously-built locomotives to the Republic of Guinea, featuring premium facilities like air-conditioned cabins with refrigerators and microwave ovens to ensure crew comfort during operations.
Export Timeline and Flagging Off
The Railway Ministry plans to deliver these advanced locomotives over the next three years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially flag off the first locomotive for export on Friday.

Collaboration Between Wabtec and Indian Railways
Manufactured by Wabtec in partnership with Indian Railways, these locomotives are produced at the Marhowra Rail Factory near Patna, Bihar. The factory was established in 2015 under an agreement to build 1,000 freight locomotives of 4,500 and 6,000 HP within a decade.
Previous Deliveries and Workforce Expansion
Since delivering the first locomotive in 2018, Wabtec has supplied over 700 locomotives. To fulfill Guinea’s order alongside Indian commitments, the company has increased its workforce.
Customization for Guinea’s Environment
Wabtec conducted detailed studies on Guinea’s environmental conditions, including terrain and temperature, and customized the locomotives accordingly. The inclusion of refrigerators and microwaves addresses the harsh climatic conditions faced by the loco pilots.
Technical Adaptations and Site Visits
The locomotives are adapted for Guinea’s standard gauge tracks and other local operational needs. Wabtec engineers made several site visits to ensure the designs meet Guinea’s specifications.
Strategic Economic Cooperation
This export deal aligns with Guinea’s launch of its largest iron ore mining project, which demands enhanced freight transport. It marks the Marhowra factory’s emergence as a global locomotive export hub, promoting technological growth and employment in India while strengthening India-Africa economic ties.
Official Statement
Dilip Kumar, executive director of the Railway Board’s Information and Publicity Department, emphasized that the export will aid infrastructure development for Guinea’s iron ore project and deepen bilateral cooperation between India and Africa.
