Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that a new Toyota Innova model will be launched on November 26, with a claimed running cost of around ₹25 per litre. The announcement has drawn attention to the growing push for alternative-fuel vehicles in India.

Gadkari highlighted the vehicle while speaking about the need to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and promote cleaner mobility options. He has repeatedly advocated the use of ethanol, biofuels, hydrogen and other alternative energy sources in the transport sector.
Focus on Alternative Fuels
The announcement comes amid India’s efforts to expand the use of ethanol-blended fuels and other alternatives to conventional petrol and diesel. Gadkari has been promoting flex-fuel vehicles, which can operate on different blends of petrol and ethanol.
Toyota has been developing hybrid and flex-fuel technologies for the Indian market. The company has also showcased vehicles that combine electrification with higher ethanol-blend compatibility.
What Does ₹25 per Litre Mean?
The ₹25 figure refers to the claimed running cost highlighted by Gadkari, not necessarily the price of fuel at the pump. Actual operating costs will depend on the vehicle’s technology, fuel type, mileage, fuel prices and driving conditions.
Further details about the new Innova’s powertrain, fuel specifications, mileage, variants and pricing are awaited ahead of the November 26 launch.
The announcement adds to the broader discussion around alternative fuels and their role in reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil while lowering transport-related emissions.
