UCSL Launches First of Eight Cargo Vessels for Norwegian Company
Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has launched the first of eight 6,300 deadweight tonne (DWT) dry cargo vessels being built for Norway-based Wilson ASA. The vessel was launched at the shipyard in Malpe, Udupi district, Karnataka, on October 26, 2026.

The launch marks a major milestone for UCSL, as the vessel is the largest built at the yard since the company was incorporated in 2021. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in December 2026.
Vessel Designed for Fuel Efficiency
The vessel measures 99 metres in length and 15.85 metres in width, with a cargo hold capacity of 3,16,278 cubic feet. It has been designed by Netherlands-based Conoship International BV for general cargo transportation.
The design focuses on fuel efficiency, with the aim of reducing operating costs and environmental impact. The vessels are intended to serve European coastal shipping routes.
Wilson ASA Chairman Eivind Eidesvik and his daughter, Anna Eidesvik, jointly launched the first vessel. Norwegian Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener participated in the programme and laid the keel for the third ship in the series.
Construction Progresses on Multiple Vessels
The shipyard marked two additional milestones during the event. The keel for the third vessel was laid, while steel cutting began for the fourth vessel, indicating that construction is progressing on multiple ships simultaneously.
The eight-vessel contract was signed in June 2024. UCSL had previously completed and delivered six 3,800 DWT dry cargo vessels to Wilson ASA. The first of those vessels was delivered in April 2025, and the remaining five were delivered over the following 14 months.
Boost to India’s Shipbuilding Capabilities
The project highlights UCSL’s growing role in international shipbuilding and its ability to execute multi-vessel orders for overseas customers. Its parent company, Cochin Shipyard Limited, has been expanding its presence in commercial and specialised vessel construction.
The latest launch also strengthens the ongoing partnership between UCSL and Wilson ASA, a Norwegian company operating a fleet of cargo vessels across Europe. The delivery of the first 6,300 DWT vessel is expected to be the next major milestone in the project.
