Brazil Explores India’s BrahMos and Akash Missile Systems
Brazil is exploring Indian defence systems, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Akash surface-to-air missile, as a military delegation begins a two-week visit to India. The visit aims to strengthen military ties, assess Indian defence technologies and identify opportunities for industrial cooperation.

More than two dozen officers from the Brazilian Army Command and General Staff School are expected to engage with senior Indian Army officials and defence industry representatives during the visit. The itinerary includes major defence facilities in Bengaluru associated with BrahMos Aerospace, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Tata Advanced Systems.
Although the visiting officers are not direct procurement decision-makers, their assessment of Indian platforms could inform Brazil’s future military requirements and procurement choices.
BrahMos for Maritime Defence, Akash for Air Defence
The BrahMos missile is a key focus as Brazil examines systems that could strengthen its maritime security and protect its extensive Atlantic coastline. Developed through an India-Russia joint venture, BrahMos offers anti-ship and precision-strike capabilities.
The Akash air defence system is another potential option as Brazil looks to modernise its air defence network. Brazil has been evaluating options under its Medium/High Altitude Air Defence Artillery programme. A visit to BEL could help the delegation examine the radar, electronics and command-and-control technologies associated with the system. Any potential acquisition would require further technical evaluation and negotiations.
India-Brazil Defence Cooperation Expands
The discussions extend beyond missiles to other areas of defence manufacturing, artillery, maritime systems and aerospace. The Garuda 105 V2 lightweight artillery system is another Indian platform highlighted as a potential area of interest.
India and Brazil are also exploring broader industrial partnerships, including joint production and co-development. Existing collaborations involving Brazilian defence companies and Indian firms reflect a growing focus on strengthening manufacturing capabilities and supply chains in both countries.
For India, the visit offers an opportunity to showcase its expanding defence manufacturing sector and explore export opportunities in Latin America. For Brazil, it provides a closer look at Indian military technologies as it considers diversifying its defence suppliers.
