Karnataka is exploring a technology partnership with China to strengthen its biofuel production capabilities and accelerate the adoption of green energy. The initiative follows a meeting between Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board (KSBDB) Chairman S. E. Sudheendra and Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong at Kempegowda International Airport on October 22, 2026.

During the meeting, Sudheendra highlighted Karnataka’s potential to expand biofuel production, adopt environmentally friendly technologies and increase the use of sustainable energy sources. Discussions focused on possible cooperation in joint research, technology exchange and industrial development.
Focus on Ethanol and Biodiesel Production
A key area of interest is the production of ethanol and biodiesel using agricultural waste and biomass. By converting agricultural residues into useful fuels, Karnataka aims to support cleaner energy production, improve resource utilisation and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
The proposed cooperation could also help the state access technical expertise and knowledge relevant to the development of bioenergy projects and green technologies.
China Signals Openness to Green Energy Cooperation
According to the board, Xu Feihong appreciated Karnataka’s initiatives to promote green technology and clean energy. He also responded positively to proposals involving technical assistance, knowledge sharing and cooperation on environmentally friendly energy projects.
Officials from the board, including Bengaluru Rural Deputy Commissioner Anuradha, attended the meeting.
Karnataka Expands International Green Energy Partnerships
The proposed engagement with China is part of Karnataka’s broader efforts to build international partnerships in biofuels and sustainable energy. The board has also held discussions with organisations from Bulgaria and Japan to explore cooperation in the green energy sector.
Such partnerships could create opportunities for technology development, research and industrial investment while supporting Karnataka’s efforts to expand biofuel production and build a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
The discussions are exploratory, and no formal agreement or specific investment commitment has been announced.
