Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has begun construction on a ₹2,500 crore international terminal expansion under Project Anantha, marking a major step in strengthening the airport’s infrastructure and international passenger-handling capacity.

The foundation stone for the project was laid on October 16, 2026. The expansion aims to increase the airport’s annual international passenger-handling capacity from the current 3.5 million to approximately 11.5 million passengers.
Project Anantha: Expanding International Capacity
The development will cover approximately 92,552 square metres, with construction beginning near the departure area of the existing international terminal at Chacka.
The project is designed to accommodate rising passenger demand while improving the airport’s ability to handle international traffic. Once completed, the expanded facilities are expected to provide greater capacity and support the airport’s long-term growth.
Modern Passenger Facilities Planned
The expansion includes several upgrades aimed at improving passenger movement and operational efficiency. Planned facilities include modern check-in areas, expanded immigration counters and new baggage-handling systems.
Additional retail outlets and duty-free shopping facilities will also form part of the development, enhancing the range of services available to international travellers.
The expanded infrastructure is expected to support smoother passenger processing and improve the overall travel experience.
Officials Attend Project Launch
The foundation stone-laying event was attended by Chief Airport Officer P. K. Aju, Airport Authority Officer-in-Charge Mohan Roy, TIAL Infra Head K. S. Shibu Kumar, AOC Chairman Sanjay Ambujakshan and Bureau of Immigration Assistant Director Rajan Chenguni.
Strengthening Kerala’s Aviation Infrastructure
Project Anantha represents a major infrastructure initiative for Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. By expanding terminal capacity and upgrading passenger facilities, the project aims to prepare the airport for future growth in international travel.
The increase in annual passenger-handling capacity from 35 lakh to 1.15 crore is expected to provide additional room for rising demand and support stronger international connectivity for Kerala’s capital city.
