SpaceX has imposed restrictions on some Starlink satellite internet services in Ukraine, disrupting military drone operations that rely on the network for communications and control. Ukrainian officials said the changes affected combat missions, with some operations cancelled following unexpected connectivity interruptions.

According to Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov, the military was not warned in advance about the restrictions. He said SpaceX had limited the operation of its military-grade Starlink service on drones travelling above 160 kilometres per hour.
Connectivity Issues Affect Drone Missions
Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Reaction Corps reported that Starlink connections could drop for 10 to 20 seconds when drones travelled at speeds of around 110 to 120 km/h. These interruptions made the drones more difficult to control and led to the cancellation of some missions.
Starlink has become an important communications tool for Ukraine’s armed forces since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Its satellite network supports battlefield communications, logistics and drone operations, including missions over occupied areas in southern and eastern Ukraine.
Questions Over the Restrictions
The reason for the reported limitations was not immediately clear. The development comes amid wider tensions surrounding Ukraine’s military support and pressure from Washington over Kyiv’s attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. However, Reuters reported that Ukrainian drones targeting Russian oil facilities use other communication systems, and the restrictions were not confirmed to be directly linked to those operations.
SpaceX had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment at the time of reporting. The incident has highlighted the importance of commercial satellite networks in modern warfare and the operational challenges that can arise when military forces depend on privately operated communications systems.
Starlink’s Role in Ukraine
Starlink’s resistance to electronic jamming has made it a key component of Ukraine’s battlefield communications. Its use extends beyond drone missions to frontline coordination and logistical support.
The reported restrictions could complicate some military operations as Ukraine continues to rely on satellite connectivity. The full operational impact and the duration of the limitations remain unclear.
