Kannur International Airport is set for major changes over the next year as Kerala plans to develop it into a major aviation hub. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced the plans while inaugurating the airport’s new international air cargo complex and a 4 MW solar power project.
A key priority is securing point-of-call status for Kannur airport. The lack of this status has restricted the airport’s ability to operate international services, and the state government plans to take steps to address the issue.
The proposed expansion also includes a pilot training centre, a helicopter pilot training centre, an aircraft maintenance centre and a simulator training centre. These facilities are expected to strengthen the airport’s aviation ecosystem and create additional training and employment opportunities.
The government will also examine whether the 240-acre land already notified for a second runway is suitable for the project. The Chief Minister said issues faced by local residents in connection with the proposed development would be addressed.
