Virat Kohli has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in home ODIs. Kohli achieved the milestone during India’s first ODI against the West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27.
Kohli needed 110 runs in the match to move past Tendulkar’s record of 6,976 runs in ODIs played in India. He crossed the mark during the 40th over of India’s innings, taking his home ODI tally to 6,979 runs.
Tendulkar scored his 6,976 runs in 164 ODIs in India between 1990 and 2011. Kohli reached 6,979 runs in his 131st home ODI.
Kohli reaches another ODI milestone
Kohli also scored his 55th ODI century during the same innings. He reached the century in just 74 balls while India were chasing a target of 296 runs against the West Indies.
He eventually finished unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls, helping India complete the chase with eight wickets and 50 deliveries remaining.
With his 55th ODI century, Kohli extended his lead over Tendulkar in terms of ODI hundreds. Tendulkar finished his career with 49 ODI centuries, while Rohit Sharma is third on the list with 34.
Most ODI runs at home
Kohli now leads the list of batters with the most runs in home ODIs. Tendulkar remains second, followed by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, Rohit Sharma and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis.
Kohli has also scored more ODI centuries against the West Indies than any other batter. His latest hundred was his 10th against the Caribbean side in the 50-over format.
Kohli reaches 15,000 ODI runs
The Thiruvananthapuram innings also saw Kohli cross another major landmark as he went past 15,000 ODI runs.
Kohli reached the milestone in his 303rd ODI innings, becoming the fastest player to reach the mark in terms of innings. Tendulkar had reached 15,000 ODI runs in his 377th innings in 2007.
Kohli finished the match with 15,080 ODI runs, while Tendulkar accumulated 18,426 runs during his career.
The two batters reached the landmark in different eras of ODI cricket. Tendulkar began his international career in 1989, while Kohli established himself in the modern era of faster scoring and higher team totals.
Kohli’s latest innings in Thiruvananthapuram added another major chapter to his ODI record, with the batter moving past Tendulkar’s home ODI tally while also reaching his 55th century and the 15,000-run milestone.
