India is targeting a larger and more integrated semiconductor ecosystem, with plans for five large chip manufacturers, three major materials companies and at least two advanced packaging facilities.
This is an exclusive development reported by India Today. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the broader semiconductor sector could generate more than one lakh direct and indirect jobs as India builds capacity across the supply chain.
The government’s focus extends beyond chip fabrication to specialised materials, chemicals, gases, equipment, advanced packaging, chip design and skilled manpower. According to Vaishnaw, around 85,000 semiconductor engineers have already been trained in India.
India is also looking towards more advanced chip technologies, with the government targeting 7nm and 3nm technologies over the next eight years.
