Indian Railways is expanding the Vande Bharat network with a major push for sleeper trains designed for overnight and long-distance journeys.
The first Vande Bharat sleeper trains began service between Guwahati and Howrah, while another pair is undergoing trials. Railways now plans around 260 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets through multiple manufacturing programmes.
BEML is manufacturing the first 10 trains, while ICF Chennai will produce another 50. A further 200 trainsets have been awarded to two consortiums, with Kinet Railway Solutions set to manufacture 120 and the Titagarh-BHEL joint venture 80.
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains have a design speed of 180 kmph and an operational speed of up to 160 kmph, depending on the route.
The trains will feature cushioned berths, night lighting, CCTV surveillance, modular pantries, bio-vacuum toilets, charging points and automatic doors. AC First Class coaches will also offer shower facilities and hot water.
Safety and efficiency features include indigenous KAVACH anti-collision technology and regenerative braking. The expansion is aimed at providing faster, safer and more comfortable overnight travel across India’s railway network.
