The Indian Navy has received its first indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel, Samarthak, built by Larsen & Toubro at its Kattupalli shipyard.
The vessel was delivered to the Navy on August 27, 2026, and features more than 75% indigenous content.
Designed as a versatile trial and evaluation platform, Samarthak can undertake a range of maritime missions, including surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations.
The vessel’s multi-purpose design allows it to support different operational requirements rather than being restricted to a single mission.
The delivery marks another milestone in the Indian Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding programme and reflects India’s broader push towards a self-reliant domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
