India is expanding its counter-drone security beyond military bases and fixed defence locations. The government has placed orders worth around Rs 155 crore for the Indrajaal Ranger, a mobile anti-drone system designed to protect borders, VVIP movements, public events and urban areas.
Mobile Anti Drone System
The Indrajaal Ranger has been developed by Indrajaal Autonomous Defense Systems and Sigma Advanced Systems. It is designed as an Anti-Drone Patrol Vehicle that can detect, track, identify and counter unauthorised drones while moving.
Rs 155 Crore Orders
The orders include a Rs 145 crore contract for border security and another order worth around Rs 10 crore from an urban police force for VVIP and city security.
Protection Beyond Military Bases
Counter-drone systems were earlier mainly used around military bases and important defence locations. The growing use of drones for surveillance, smuggling and other threats has created a need for systems that can move with security teams.
The Ranger is designed for use along borders, VVIP routes, public events, airports and critical infrastructure.
Useful For Moving Security Operations
The biggest advantage of the Ranger is its mobility. It can provide counter-drone protection while security forces are moving.
This can be useful for VVIP convoys, temporary public events, airports and large infrastructure facilities where fixed systems may not be enough.
Three Layers Of Protection
The Ranger uses the SkyOS platform, which combines sensors, artificial intelligence, sensor fusion and command and control systems.
Its three main protection features include Retractor, which can take control of rogue drones, Lakshman Rekha, which creates a virtual security boundary, and Net Interceptor, which can physically capture hostile drones.
Growing Role In Homeland Security
The new orders show that counter-drone technology is becoming part of wider homeland security in India.
The technology could increasingly be used by the armed forces, border agencies, police, airports and authorities protecting critical infrastructure and VVIPs.
Boost For Indian Defence Industry
The programme also highlights the growing role of private Indian defence companies in developing security technology.
