State-run telecom operator BSNL is preparing to launch its 5G mobile services, with December 2026 set as the target for the rollout. The company says its existing 4G network is already equipped to make the transition to the next generation of mobile technology.
BSNL 5G Testing Already Underway
BSNL Kerala Chief General Manager R Saji Kumar said the company has already started testing its 5G network, which has been developed using indigenous technology.
He said the transition from 4G to 5G would mainly require software upgrades because BSNL’s existing 4G infrastructure is already 5G-ready.
However, the company wants its current 4G network to become more stable before moving fully to 5G services.
7,200 Towers in Kerala Can Be Upgraded
BSNL Kerala has around 86 lakh mobile subscribers and nearly 7,200 4G mobile towers across the state.
According to Saji Kumar, these towers can be upgraded to support 5G services. Kerala is also expected to benefit from the installation of 26,300 new mobile towers being deployed across India to strengthen BSNL’s 4G network.
The expanded infrastructure is expected to improve coverage and provide a stronger foundation for the eventual 5G rollout.
More Towers Planned in Remote Areas
BSNL is also working to improve mobile connectivity in underserved parts of Kerala.
The telecom operator plans to install 323 new towers in areas with limited coverage. Another 37 towers are planned for Lakshadweep to improve connectivity in the Union Territory.
BSNL has also increased its IMS capacity in Kerala to manage higher network traffic and improve service performance during periods of heavy usage.
New Independence Day Offers
Alongside its 5G plans, BSNL has announced several customer offers for Independence Day.
The schemes include the Re 1 Freedom 2.0 offer, the Fibre Freedom Plan and additional validity benefits on selected annual prepaid plans.
The Fibre Freedom Plan has been introduced with a launch price of Rs 1,111 per month.
BSNL Prepares for Next Generation Services
With 4G network expansion continuing and 5G testing already underway, BSNL is preparing to move towards next-generation mobile services.
The December 2026 target will depend on stabilising the existing 4G network and completing the required upgrades, while the additional towers and infrastructure expansion are expected to strengthen BSNL’s network across Kerala and other parts of the country.
