India is moving closer to finalising the ₹90,000 crore Project-75I submarine programme, one of the country’s largest-ever naval acquisitions. The project aims to build six advanced conventional submarines in India with significant technology transfer, strengthening both national security and domestic defence manufacturing.
The submarines will feature Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, enabling them to remain submerged for much longer than conventional diesel-electric submarines. Enhanced stealth, endurance and combat capabilities are expected to significantly improve the Indian Navy’s ability to operate across the Indian Ocean Region amid evolving maritime security challenges.
Project-75I is also a major ‘Make in India’ initiative, with the submarines to be constructed domestically through technology transfer and industrial collaboration. Beyond strengthening naval deterrence, the programme is expected to boost India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, create high-skilled jobs and reduce dependence on imported military platforms.
