Indian Railways is stepping up preparations for the Onam travel rush, announcing 112 special train trips to Kerala during the 2026 festive season. The services are scheduled to operate primarily between August 14 and September 6, providing additional travel options during one of Kerala’s busiest travel periods.
The 112 notified trips represent a significant expansion from last year’s Onam arrangements. In 2025, 55 special trips were operated, meaning the number has increased by around 103 per cent this year. Southern Railway has attributed the expansion to strategic planning and coordination with neighbouring railway zones.
The special services will connect major cities and transport hubs including Chennai, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, Hyderabad and Santragachi with key destinations across Kerala. These include Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kannur and Mangaluru.
Of the 112 notified trips, 54 are being operated by Southern Railway, while another 58 services are being provided by other railway zones. The additional trains are intended to clear waitlisted passengers, reduce congestion on high-demand routes and make festive travel more convenient.
Railway authorities are continuing to monitor passenger demand and waiting-list trends. Additional services could be announced if required, offering further relief to passengers planning to travel to Kerala during the Onam season.
