The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) plans to hire private buses to manage the heavy travel rush expected during the Onam season.
Transport Minister C P John said the move is necessary as KSRTC faces a shortage of buses, with many vehicles in its existing fleet having become old. The corporation has reportedly not purchased new buses over the past decade.
Thousands of people working and studying outside Kerala return home during Onam, often facing steep ticket prices due to increased demand. Fares that normally cost around ₹1,500 can rise to ₹3,000–₹4,000 in the private sector.
The minister has invited owners of well-maintained buses to make their vehicles available for Onam operations. KSRTC is willing to share the day’s revenue with participating private bus operators.
