India’s state-run oil marketing companies are planning to expand the availability of lightweight 10-kg LPG cylinders, offering consumers a more convenient alternative to the conventional heavier cylinders used in homes and businesses. The proposal is currently under consideration and will require regulatory approval before a nationwide rollout.
The 10-kg cylinders are designed to be significantly lighter and easier to lift, transport, and store. They were initially introduced for select domestic consumers but are now being considered for wider use, including by small commercial establishments such as tea stalls, restaurants, food vendors, and small retail outlets.

Unlike the standard 14.2-kg domestic cylinder and 19-kg commercial cylinder, the smaller option offers greater portability without compromising safety. It is expected to be particularly useful for senior citizens, people living alone, and customers who find conventional cylinders difficult to handle.
Oil companies believe the move will improve accessibility while encouraging greater LPG adoption across different consumer segments. If approved, the cylinders are likely to be sold at commercial LPG rates for business users, creating an additional fuel option for small enterprises.
The proposal reflects the government’s broader effort to modernise LPG distribution by making cooking fuel more user-friendly, portable, and accessible for households and businesses across India.
