The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been ranked as the world’s sixth most powerful air arm in the 2026 World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) rankings. The latest assessment places the IAF ahead of China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), underscoring India’s growing air combat capabilities.

The WDMMA rankings evaluate air forces using multiple parameters, including aircraft quality, operational capability, modernization, logistics, force structure and overall combat readiness, rather than fleet size alone.
The IAF’s position has been strengthened by the induction of advanced platforms such as the Rafale fighter jets, Su-30MKI, LCA Tejas, C-17 Globemaster, C-130J Super Hercules, Apache attack helicopters and Chinook heavy-lift helicopters, alongside continuous upgrades to its existing fleet.
The ranking reflects India’s sustained focus on military modernization, indigenous defence production and strengthening national security, reinforcing the Indian Air Force’s position among the world’s leading air powers.
