Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, is widely recognised as one of the key contributors behind Shakti, India’s indigenous microprocessor project based on the open-source RISC-V architecture. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s technological self-reliance in semiconductor design and secure computing.

Beyond engineering, Kamakoti is a passionate Carnatic musician. In an interview with Electronics For You, he said, “Music is an integral part of my life, and I cannot imagine my life without it.” He explained that music has played a significant role in shaping his personality, discipline and approach to problem-solving.

Born in Chennai, Kamakoti spent much of his early childhood in villages with his grandparents, an experience that influenced his outlook on life, education and innovation. He later pursued engineering before dedicating his career to computer architecture, cybersecurity and indigenous processor development.

As Director of IIT Madras, he has consistently encouraged Indian industries to adopt homegrown technologies such as the Shakti processor and has championed innovation through startups and research.

Kamakoti’s journey demonstrates that scientific excellence and artistic passion can complement each other, inspiring future engineers to embrace both technology and creativity.
