BJP state president and Nemom MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Sunday said that Thiruvananthapuram will host one of India’s first university townships, calling it a major step towards building a world-class hub for education, technology and research. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for supporting the initiative.

Vision for a technology and research hub
In a social media post, Chandrasekhar said he has been working since 2024 to position Thiruvananthapuram as a leading centre for innovation. He noted that the new university township marks a significant milestone in turning that vision into reality.
He said the project, along with the Thiruvananthapuram Research and Innovation Cluster (T-RIC), will help build a strong innovation ecosystem that benefits young people in Kerala.
Integrated innovation network plan
According to Chandrasekhar, the proposed township and T-RIC will work together to connect universities, research institutions, startups, industries and the Vizhinjam Port into a single integrated ecosystem. He said this structure would strengthen collaboration and speed up innovation.
Job creation and startup growth
He added that the initiative is expected to generate high-paying jobs in sectors such as technology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and deep-tech research. It will also help local startups scale into global companies, offering more opportunities for young professionals within Kerala.
Part of national education initiative
The announcement follows the Union Budget proposal to establish five university townships near major industrial and logistics hubs. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had outlined the plan as part of broader efforts to strengthen India’s higher education and innovation infrastructure.
Towards a developed Kerala
Chandrasekhar said the project would help retain talent in the state and reduce the need for young Malayalis to move elsewhere for opportunities. He described it as a key step towards building a “developed Kerala” driven by innovation, research and industry collaboration.
