The Zoji La Tunnel is an under-construction 13.15-kilometre road tunnel beneath the Zoji La Pass, connecting Baltal in Jammu & Kashmir with Minamarg in Ladakh. It is being developed to provide uninterrupted, year-round connectivity on the strategic Srinagar–Leh highway.
Once completed, the tunnel will become the world’s longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at such a high altitude, significantly reducing travel disruptions caused by heavy snowfall and avalanches.

The project will reduce travel time across the Zoji La Pass from more than an hour to around 15 minutes, making journeys faster, safer and more reliable for residents, tourists and commercial transport.
Beyond civilian benefits, the tunnel holds major strategic importance by ensuring year-round movement of defence personnel, military equipment and essential supplies to Ladakh, strengthening India’s border preparedness.
Designed as a smart tunnel, it will feature advanced ventilation, CCTV monitoring, emergency communication systems, fire safety equipment and dedicated escape passages to improve operational safety.
With construction nearing completion after achieving a major breakthrough milestone in June 2026, the Zoji La Tunnel is expected to become a landmark engineering achievement that transforms connectivity, tourism and economic growth across the Himalayan region.
